What is Body-Inclusive Care?

It is an approach that incorporates Health at Every Size® principles, but goes beyond that to provide respectful, weight-neutral support for all body sizes and needs.

  • Clients who feel their lived experiences are heard and respected are more likely to engage in and benefit from therapy. Studies show that collaborative care models improve treatment outcomes, especially for marginalized populations (Mead & Bower, 2002). Body-inclusive care centers the client’s voice, honoring their wisdom and story as vital to the healing process.

  • Autonomy is a core component of ethical and effective care. Research shows that supporting client autonomy is associated with reduced psychological distress and increased motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2000). In body-inclusive care, we respect each person’s right to choose what happens with their body—without coercion or shame.

  • Approximately 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. lives with a disability (CDC, 2023), yet many therapeutic environments remain inaccessible. Body-inclusive care removes barriers through virtual therapy, sensory-friendly tools, and adaptive communication methods—ensuring care is truly reachable for all.

  • Weight stigma is linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and body dissatisfaction—often more than weight itself (Puhl & Heuer, 2009). When combined with racism, ableism, or other systemic oppressions, these harms compound. Body-inclusive care actively addresses bias and honors the intersections of identity that shape mental health.

  • Language shapes experience. Research shows that stigmatizing or pathologizing language leads to poorer outcomes and increased provider bias (Kelly & Westerhoff, 2010). In body-inclusive care, we use affirming, respectful language to uphold every client’s dignity and humanity.
